How to Sing High Notes -Journey Style

How to sing higher

How to sing high notes like Steve Perry (Journey)

This how to sing high notes with ease video uses ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ by Journey as an example.

To learn how to sing high notes without screaming it is important to understand the concept of lightening up the vocal fold mass in the upper register. That means that we use less of the vocal folds/cords in the production of the tone as we sing the higher notes in the vocal range.

Please bear in mind that I am not attempting to show YOU how to sing like Steve Perry from Journey as only HE can do that! I have purposely recorded this video in a very simplistic way – it’s just the voice and an acoustic guitar; no EQ, no compression, no reverb and no editing. This was done in one take and I hope it will give you a good idea how to sing high notes without screaming or straining! To hear some high notes with screaming check out my ‘How to Sing Rock‘ (Judas Priest) video 🙂

If I can do it then SO CAN YOU!

    Hi Tony,
Great video on your approach. By the way, if you don’t use this at least email me back if you can. cheers.

I feel I’ve been getting better results lately going back to my Roger Love material as he goes for more depth in middle voice from E thru A/Bb area or the low larynx thing. Obviously he relates back to SLS as he worked with Seth originally. Still a bit hit and miss but much easier to get going.

My point here is that I think he would say you were going straight to head voice here particularly around the lower of the high notes.

Anyway, that aside I was wondering how you got on at your SLS seminar you attended in August (I think you said it was then)? Perhaps it would be more appropriate to ask what you took away from that?

Here is a link to some pretty good sounding although not rock high notes both in a lesson with Seth and one with Greg Enriquez that I found recently. Nothing weak here:

…When I say not ‘rock’ high notes it is meant with a pinch of salt because I’d say you could do what you want with a voice that good!
